Why Am I Always Tired After 8 Hours Sleep?

Getting 8 hours but still exhausted? The most common causes are sleep quality and circadian timing.

This is one of the most common and most frustrating sleep complaints — hitting the "recommended" 8 hours and still feeling exhausted. The explanation is almost always that total time asleep is only one factor; quality and timing matter just as much, sometimes more.

Sleep Quality vs Sleep Quantity

Eight hours of fragmented, light sleep with frequent micro-awakenings can leave you more tired than six hours of deep, uninterrupted sleep. Most people are unaware of brief awakenings during the night — they are often too short to be remembered, but they still reduce sleep continuity and the proportion of restorative deep sleep you get.

Common Causes of Fragmented Sleep

Undiagnosed sleep apnoea (see our full guide on warning signs), room temperature that is too warm (ideal is 16–19°C / 61–67°F), alcohol before bed (it helps you fall asleep but fragments the second half of the night significantly), and light or noise disturbances you are not consciously aware of.

Circadian Misalignment

Sleeping 8 hours at the "wrong" time relative to your natural chronotype can leave you unrefreshed even with adequate duration. A Wolf chronotype forced into an early bedtime, for example, may lie awake for the first hour or two — meaning their actual restorative sleep window is shorter than 8 hours even though they were in bed for 8 hours.

Waking Mid-Cycle

Sleep occurs in roughly 90-minute cycles, and waking from deep sleep mid-cycle produces sleep inertia — grogginess that can last 15–45 minutes regardless of total sleep duration. An alarm set for exactly 8 hours may land you in the middle of a deep sleep phase rather than the light phase at a cycle boundary.

What to Do

Track your actual sleep patterns for two weeks, review your chronotype, and consider whether your wake alarm is landing at a natural cycle boundary. If daytime sleepiness persists despite consistent, adequate-duration sleep, it is worth discussing with a doctor to rule out sleep apnoea or other underlying conditions.
